CONTEMPLATIONS ON COVID

ON COVID  10/20/21

It’s a hard time for all of us, including young adults. COVID is an unprecedented crisis among the many others facing this post 9/11 generation. They have everything right not to trust us- over the past 30 years corruption has flourished in every institution, government, religious, educational, the climate crisis, plastics, predatory lending, massive student loans, big agricultural, big pharma, school shootings, damn even the Olympics is no longer without stain! The world is by all outward appearances a mess, and from the perspective of a 20-30 somethings it all happened on our watch. We really don’t have a leg to stand on never mind a soap box.

As much as we want it to be, it’s not black and white, and if we  REALLY want young people to feel safe getting vaccinated, IMO we need to refrain from being condescending and indignant and engage them with open minds and hearts, listen to their concerns and provide information. That’s what I have been trying to do every day with the bright and intelligent young people I know to feel reassured enough to get vaccinated.

We have to acknowledge the risks of the vaccine provide the information, show comparatives to the other risks we take in life. Yes, there are risks, people have been harmed, and it’s the best chance we’ve got..We can’t shame them for asking legitimate questions. We have to engage their concerns otherwise we are abandoning them when they need us the most-I use the analogy of war - we send soldiers knowing some may die. No one wants it to be their kid, but we understand there are risks- and we go forward in hopes we beat the enemy and honor those lost in the battle- it’s a tough time. Thanks for using your voice

I am not pushing a narrative- I am asking to discern what are the pertinent questions and which aren’t. The only question that matters IMO is cost/benefit and caring about people other than ourselves - that’s what vaccines are about. That’s what herd immunity is about. Protecting each other. How many people are worth losing to covid because some may have adverse reactions to the vaccine? If you’re fine, but getting covid means spreading it to another who will die; is it still worth taking the chance of getting vaccinated?  Do you know why  there are no smoking laws? Because it was determined that second hand smoke is dangerous to others. I’m not arguing there are no adverse experiences nor am I saying there’s not more people who get it that are fine...but that not what the point is...how many aren’t? How many are dying from covid and do vaccine risks out way the benefits? That’s the only question that matters IMO.

Why jump out of an airplane when you know there’s a chance of death, why is bug spray when it causes cancer, why do women get Botox when there could be adverse reactions? Or boob jobs? Is vanity more valuable than protecting others who may get ill. How many people drive and never need their seatbelts to keep them safe? How many die from seat belt injuries?

And for every thoughtful person there are ignorant people and that’s why we try to elect leaders who hopefully have wisdom. Just like the guy who raced past us last night and all those people didn’t let you get on the road. This is the collective unpleasant truth of the different levels of intelligence and ignorance and ability to comprehend. And yes, it makes those of us who can decipher information for ourselves angry. It’s a really frustrating. Not all humans are wise and mature and caring  for others -so government is supposed to balance it out and make good decisions for all the people - and some people don’t believe in that, some think it’s ever man for himself and may the fittest survive. welcome to the next level of adulthood my dear.
